Mexico City – historical and cultural capital

Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and the economic, cultural and political center of the country. The city offers visitors a warm climate as well as numerous attractions, with the Aztec culture at its center for exploration.

October to May is the best time to travel to Mexico City, as there is a rainy season from June to September. Holidays include Carnival in February and "Semana Santa" in April (from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday). Independence Day celebrations take place on September 15 and 16, with the President's midnight speech (also known as the "Grito de Dolores") marking the beginning. Independence Day is also celebrated with military parades and events. With the "Día de los Muertos", the Day of the Dead, the deceased are commemorated with parades and colorful decorations on November 01 and 02.

US visitors can enter visa free and will be issued the tourist card (FMT) upon entry. The card must be presented upon departure, all passports should still be valid for at least 6 months.

Mexico City: health, accommodation and transport tips

It is recommended to have vaccinations against diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis A and typhoid, even if these are not mandatory. Food is not allowed to be imported upon entry. Also, the export of corals, cacti, archaeological finds, protected animals, antiques and gold (exception: gold jewelry) is prohibited. Those who wish to drink alcohol should not do so on the street or in public (there are penalties). Tap water in Mexico City is not of drinking quality and one should only use boiled, sterilized water or bottled water (also for brushing teeth). For food, the rule is "cook it, peel it or forget it".

Guests can sleep in guesthouses and backpacker hostels with nightly rates starting at 200 MXN per night. For three-star hotels, expect prices starting at 400 MXN per night per person. In the Centro Histórico there are many accommodations in the lower price range, in the Zona Rosa many of the middle segment.

Local transportation is well developed and consists of the subway (12 lines), city buses ("Metrobús"), light rail ("Tren Ligero"), minibuses ("Microbús") and trolleybuses. A one-way ticket on the metro costs about MXN 5, with a reloadable card available for about MXN 10. A one-way ticket on the Metrobús costs around 6 MXN and is available on the Microbús from 4 MXN (for longer trips within the city, expect ticket prices around 5.50 MXN). A single ride on the Tren Ligero costs around 3 MXN. Ticket prices for trolley buses depend on the route and start from 2 MXN. For a cab ride, expect a starting fare of about 20 MXN for three kilometers plus about 2 MXN for each additional 250 meters. For safety reasons, it is recommended to book cabs in advance, and you should only take cabs from official cab stands ("sitio"). Hailing cabs is cheaper, but also carries a certain safety risk.
