Mexico City - in the heart of Mexico

Mexico City is the capital of Mexico. The city forms the economic, political and cultural center of Mexico and offers tourists many attractions. Among other things, the remains of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan can be explored.

The best time to travel is between October and May, while from June to September there is a rainy season. Carnival takes place in February and "Semana Santa" in April from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. On September 15 and 16, celebrations are held to mark Independence Day. These begin with the "Grito de Dolores", the presidential address, at midnight. In addition, events and military parades are held. On November 1 and 2, the deceased are commemorated on the Day of the Dead ("Día de los Muertos") with parades including colorful decorations with flowers and skulls.

Entry requirements, travel and more

US tourists can enter without a visa, although the tourist card (FMT) is issued during entry. This must be presented when leaving the country. All passports should still be valid for at least six months upon entry. Vaccinations against typhoid, hepatitis A, diphtheria and tetanus are not a must, but recommended. The importation of food and the exportation of antiques, cacti, corals, gold (except gold jewelry), archaeological finds and protected animals are prohibited. Alcohol may not be consumed in public places (fines and jail time may follow). Tap water is not of drinking quality and tourists should use bottled, disinfected or boiled water, and this also applies to brushing teeth. Food should always be washed as well as peeled. The cost of living is lower compared to major US cities, especially away from the tourist attractions. A meal in a restaurant is available for about 80-150 MXN, beer for about 50 MXN, soft drinks for about 15 MXN and street food like burritos, tortas or tacos for about 10-50 MXN.

Visitors can take the metro from the airport to the city center. The "Terminal Aérea" metro station on Line 5 is close to Terminal 1, while the "Pantitlán" metro station on Lines 1, 5, 9 and A is relatively close to Terminal 2. Ticket prices are around 5 MXN, and it may be necessary to transfer to other lines depending on your final destination. Line 1 takes about 20 minutes to reach the "Insurgentes" station in the center. The terminals are connected free of charge for air travelers by the Aerotrén services. For other guests of the airport, red buses are available for a fee. Another alternative is to use the metrobús of line 4, which can be used for about 30 MXN per person plus about 10 MXN for a rechargeable card. The price of a cab ride ranges from about 100 to 300 MXN, with cab tickets available for purchase at a counter at the terminal. The cab ride takes around 40-60 minutes.

Overnight stays in guesthouses and backpacker hostels are possible from 200 MXN per night. For an overnight stay in a three-star hotel, costs of around 400 MXN per night and person must be expected. In Centro Histórico there are many accommodations in the lower price range, in Zona Rosa many in the middle range.
